A thing I notice about Mastodon is that tapping "favorite" (like, heart, etc) is great for sending feedback to the original poster, but doesn't do much for improving the visibility of the post, since there is no algorithm in the background that brings posts to people's attention.
If you want to help the OP to reach more people, you really have to use "boost".
