@juergen_hubert In our area, small farmers are nominal landholders, but rely on the local lord for protection from brigands and monsters. They repay this service with crops mostly.
Things are a bit different near heavily populated cities. Since the cities have well regulated markets and permanent militias, trade and taxation is more the rule.
